Exotic Veterinarians FAQs

At All Creatures Veterinary Care, we provide routine wellness and preventive care services for your bird or other exotic pet. We are also happy to see your exotic pet for any medical or behavioral concerns.

  • What is wellness & preventive care?

Similar to domestic pets like cats and dogs, birds and other exotic pets benefit from regular veterinary care to help live a long, happy, and healthy life. Our vets are trained in the unique care and husbandry needs and veterinary treatment of these species.

During your pet's first wellness check, our vet will go over their housing, nutrition, and care. The vet will carry out a thorough physical examination, after which health screening tests and vaccines will be discussed and recommended when indicated. Our vet will discuss any husbandry, health, or behavior concerns with you and answer any questions you might have. Your pet is unique, and our vet's recommendations will be tailored to meet their and your family's needs.

  • What can I expect at an exotic appointment?

When you bring your exotic pet in for a routine exam, we will assess their overall health and perform a thorough physical examination. Our vet goes over their recommended preventive care plan and answers any questions you may have to help ensure your pet's health and longevity.

  • Sick Pet Appointments & Daytime Emergencies

Birds and other exotic pets with health or behavior concerns can be seen by one of our specialist veterinarians. If possible, please call  (606) 474-5146 ahead to determine the availability of an exotic pet veterinarian. Although we accept walk-in and work-in emergency visits for exotic pets, please note that there may be an additional fee if there is a double booking.

  • What is an exotic mammal?

Exotic mammals are classified as small animals such as rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, chinchillas, rats, mice, hamsters, and gerbils. Because many popular exotic pets are prey species in the wild and are consequently very good at hiding signs of illness or injury until the issue is seriously advanced. Preventive care is an extremely important element of keeping your beloved pet healthy.

  • What are avian exotic pets?

The term 'avian' refers to any and all things related to birds. These small exotic animals have become popular pets for people seeking intelligent, affectionate companions with unique personalities.

Many pet birds are prey species in the wild and may hide signs of illness as a defense mechanism against potential predators. This makes consistent, qualified preventive veterinary care extremely important to maintaining their health and well-being.

  • What are reptiles?

Reptiles are air-breathing vertebrates such as iguanas, tortoises, lizards, turtles, snakes, and more. Covered in special skin made of bony plates, hard scales, or a combination of both, they regularly shed an outer layer of skin.

To give your pet reptile the best chance at a healthy life, their habitat and diet must be meticulously maintained and preventive care must be a regular part of your care routine.
